In Tennessee, child custody is divided into two parts: 

• Legal Custody: The right to make important decisions about your child(ren) regarding their health, education, medical care, and religious upbringing.

• Physical Custody: The responsibility to shelter the child, and provide physical needs (food, clothing, etc...)

In most cases, joint custody is preferable. For this reason, joint custody is the most common custody arrangement. Parents can have joint custody, but that does not necessarily mean that time is divided equally. When having joint custody, it is rare to have a true 50/50 split.
